Grenada's medal tally increase to eight
Vincent gained the winning distance of 45.56 metres in her fourth attempt. She fouled the first attempt and then warmed up with 35.66 metres, 40.57 metres before getting the winning throw. However, her remaining two throws were far from her best. Earlier, it was a quiet morning on the final day of competition as Grenada copped another silver medal. Walt Williams finished second in the Under-20 Boys’ Discuss Throw to push Grenada’s medal tally to seven going into the final evening session of the championships. Williams’ 16.69 metres was his personal best. Meantime, Joel Phillip and Akido Noel are chasing medals in the Boys’ Heptathlon Open. They are currently second the third respectively in the standings. Later this evening, there should be more prospects for Grenada in the field with Nathalia Vincent who was suffering with muscular pain will be competing in the Under-20 Girls’ Javelin Throw. Ann-Marie Francis will also compete in the Under-17 Girls’ Javelin Throw. Sherry Fletcher runs out of Lane Five in the final of the Under-20 Girls’ 200 metres, Akido Noel and Joel Phillip will contest the final event of the Heptathlon Open, Cristelle Collins in the Under-17 Girls’ Triple Jump, and Neilon Joseph competes in the Under-20 Boys’ 5000 metres. Nerissa Phillip will also see competition in the Under-17 Girls’ 100 metres hurdles and the Under-17 Girls’ 4x400 metres relay team will conclude Grenada’s programme on the final day of competition. Intense competition is expected during the final session with the Under-20 Boys’ 200 metres featuring world record holder Usain Bolt. Grenada was among countries which added to their tally on the second day of the Junior CARIFTA Track and Field Championships at the National Centre in Bermuda. Kurt Felix added gold to his bronze medal he won on the opening day. Felix won the Under-17 Boys’ Javelin Throw with a distance of 50.29 metres. Other medal winners on Saturday included Skeeta Isaac who finished second in the Under-17 Girls’ High Jump with a leap of 1.65 metres. Isaac was in contention for the gold medal but failed on her attempt of 1.68 metres, the winning height by Latroya Darrel of Bermuda. Walt Williams also collected a medal in the field event, a third-placed finish in the Under-20 Boys’ Discuss with a distance of 49.55 metres. The other Grenadian medal came in the Under-17 Girls’ 4x100 metres Relay. The quartet of Ann-Marie Francis, Natalie Hypolite, Cristelle Collins and Allison George secured the silver medal ahead of Trinidad and Tobago but behind of Jamaica. The Jamaicans swelled their tally by another dozen medals including six golds and extend their lead in the standings ahead of the final day on Sunday. Their performance centred around an outstanding run by the Under-20 Boys’ 4x100 Relay team anchored by world 200m junior record holder Usain Bolt as Jamaica won all the relays on the penultimate evening of competition. The quartet of Kevin Stewart, Renaldo Rose, Nestar Carter and Bolt clocked 39.48 seconds. The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and the home team also shared in the glory on the second day. The Bahamas are the only real challenge for the Jamaicans as they also added to their medal tally with about a half-dozen medals. Trinidad and Tobago bright spot came when Pilar McShine outran Lorain McKenzie of Jamaica to win the Girls’ 3000m Open. Bermuda kept their home crowd engaged with victories in the Under-20 Boys’ Long Jump and the Under-17 Girls’ High Jump. Jamaica leads the tally with 46 medals including 23 gold medals, the Bahamas 16, Bermuda six with three gold medals and Trinidad and Tobago 12 with two gold medals. here on Wednesday morning for the Games in Hamilton, Bermuda. Two athletes -
Sherry Fletcher and Walt Williams, who are based at Central Arizona College,
will join the other members of the team in Bermuda.
GAA names CARIFTA Squad for Bermuda by Michael Bascombe ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (Mar 27) - The Grenada Athletic Association on Saturday released the names of a 14-member team to represent Grenada at the 2004 Junior CARIFTA Games in Bermuda next month. The team includes only two newcomers - Ann-Marie Francis (Under-17 Girls) and Kurt Felix (Under-17 Boys). The strength of the local team will depend largely on last year's double gold medallist Neilon Joseph, triple medallist Joel Phillip and Under-20 girls javelin champion Nathalia Vincent. Joseph won both the 1500m and 3000m Under-17 boys in Port-of-Spain while Phillip won the Under-17 long jump and secured bronze medals in the high and triple jumps. Missing from the squad are last year's Under-17 boys javelin gold and bronze medallists Jody Placid and Wayne George respectively, under-17 boys discus bronze medallist Raedon Gill, and under-17 boys shot put silver medallist Deon Charles. Two athletes - Sherry Fletcher and Walt Williams, who are studying at Central Arizona Junior College, will join the team in Bermuda. There will be live audio and text reports on GrenadaSports during the Games.
