BACOLET, Tobago, March 28 Grenada finished with eight medals including one gold at the completion of the 34th Junior CARIFTA Games at the Dwight Yorke Stadium here on Monday.

Grenada, who for the first time in about four years’ of competition, failed to win a medal in the Under 17 Javelin events, took the top two positions in the boys’ heptathlon event.

Joel Phillip took the gold medal with a total score of 4803 points followed by Akido Noel (4748) and Peter Carter of Trinidad and Tobago (3884).

Adding to the silver and bronze medals achieved by Sherry Fletcher and Andon Mitchell on Saturday, Grenada also won a silver medal in the boys’ Under 17 3000m from Chad Isaac and two bronze medals in the Under 20 girls’ 4x100m relay team and Jillian Stephen in the girls’ Under 17 High Jump.

The morning session was relatively quiet for the ‘big-guns’ particularly Jamaica who failed to qualify for the boys’ 4x100m Relay Under 20.

Jamaica and Barbados didn’t finish after dropping the batons while Grenada and the Cayman Islands were disqualified.

On the final day of competition, Grenada secured only one medal as Fletcher took the bronze in the girls' Under 20 200m. It wasn't her best start but fought back in the last 60 metres to finish third.

For the first time Grenada participated in all the relay events  but only picked up one medal ( girls' Under 20 Relay).

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, March 16 – 2004 medallists Akido Noel, Joel Phillip and Neilon Joseph will spearhead a 30-member Grenada Team for the 2005 Junior CARIFTA Games in Tobago next weekend.

Joseph, who won a bronze in the Under-20 boys' 5000m and Phillip and Noel silver and bronze medallists respectively in the heptathlon event are the only repeat individual medallists included in the team.

However, the strength of the Grenada team will again be in the field events, specifically in the javelin disciplines.

Grenada has had a rich history in the javelin events winning 49 medals, including 26 gold since the inception of the Games in 1972.

In fact, Grenada successfully defended the gold medal in the boys’ Under-17 category between 1999 and 2004.

The prospects of this country surpassing its 11-medal haul last year however are uncertain because apart from the Heptathlon athletes only last year’s 4x100m relay silver medallists girls’ quartet have been included. But they will be competing in the Under-20 category.

Central Arizona College sprinter, Sherry Fletcher, who missed out on a medal in the Under-20 Girls’ 200m, has been included.

The team which was selected following last weekend’s National Championship will be accompanied by six officials.
