Bruce Swan

It has been an exciting weekend for two of Grenada's athletes at Wichita State University.

Randy Lewis and Bruce Swan have been sharing the spotlight at Wichita over the past two weeks.

Only this weekend, Lewis broke his own school and national record at the Drake Relays (www.drakerelays.com) when he won the triple jump with a leap of 16.80m. His previous record stood at 16.29.

Swan finished second in the 100m (10.75s, -3.9m/s winds).

Swan had picked up two awards within the past week. He was named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Track Athlete-of-the-Week. It's the first time this year Swan has earned this award.

Competing at home, Swan took two individual titles, set three MVC season-best marks and qualified for the NCAA regional meet in two events.

At the 55th Annual K.T. Woodman Classic, the senior won the 100-meter dash at 10.34, setting a new personal best, a Valley best and earning a regional qualifying mark.

He won the 200-meter dash in a time of 20.93, which also is an MVC season-best time. Swan ran the third leg of the 4X100 meter team that broke the meet record at 40.27 and he ran the anchor leg of the 4X400 that took second and earned a qualifying mark at 3:09.09.

Swan was also selected, along with Jenna Cannon of Bradley, as the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the period of April 7-13.

The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies, honors conference student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. The program began during the 1999-00 academic year.

”We are very excited about our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farm’s family of dairies,” said Commissioner Doug Elgin, who is in his 15th year with The Valley. “Our student-athletes are our best ambassadors, and we are fortunate to have dedicated people like Bruce (Swan) and Jenna (Cannon) as our Scholar-Athletes of the Week.”

A member of the Wichita State men’s track and field team, Swan, a senior from St. Patrick, Grenada, captured two individual titles at the 55th Annual K.T. Woodman Classic on April 11-12, while posting three Missouri Valley Conference season-best marks and qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet in two events.

Swan, who has a 3.293 cumulative grade-point average in mathematics/statistics, won the 100-meter dash in a personal- and Valley season-best time of 10.34 and the 200-meter dash in an MVC season-best time of 20.93.

A member of the Bradley women’s golf team, Cannon, a junior from Big Lake, Minn., claimed the individual title at the Southwest Missouri State Payne Stewart Memorial on April 7-8.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
