Seville, Spain - Grenada's Alleyne Francique clocked his fastest 400m for the
season finishing second at a Grand Prix Meeting here on
Saturday.
Francique (44.92) was behind Marc Raquil of France in a race
dominated with Europeans runners.
Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic finished third in
45.23s.
Raquil, France's 2001 European Cup winner, took the 400m in a
personal and national record best of 44.80, while running in lane
7 thanks to a devastating final 50m. It was Britain’s Daniel
Caines (running in 6) who got off faster and by halfway he had
already caught the long-striding Frenchman. However, the home
straight seemed to be never ending for the Briton, who faded to
fourth also being overhauled by Francique, and World 400m Hurdles
champion Sánchez, the former also running inside 45 seconds.
Francique, the NCAA 400m Indoor record holder, is Grenada's only professional athlete. He is expected
to
participate in the Cable & Wireless National Track and Field
Championships at the National Stadium, June 21-22 and the XIX
Central American and Caribbean Senior Track and Field
Championships also at the National Stadium, July 4-6.
