Bratislava, Slovakia - Grenada's Alleyne Francique snatched his
first victory on the Grand Prix Circuit when he won the 400m at
the Slovak Gold here on Monday.
In hot weather before 2000 spectators at the 44th edition of
this IAAF GP II meet, the one lap races proved to be the
highlights.
The Edmonton World Championships finalist Francique won in a
very solid 45.01, ahead of Mauritius record holder Eric Milazar
(45.46) and World Indoor Championships silver medalist Daniel
Caines of Great Britain (45.97).
Also coming into shape is the current World champion Amy Mbacke
Thiam from Senegal. She won thanks to a strong finish in the very
good time of 51.15, her fastest this year.
There were two other Caribbean winners here on Monday.
Jamaica's Debbie-Ann Parris won the 400m hurdles (55.51) and her
compatriot, Juliet Campbell was first in the 200m (22.87).
Bahamian Christine was second (51.28) behind Senegal's Amy
MBacke Thiam (51.15) while Aliann Pompey of Guyana finished fifth
(51.99).
Francique is expected in his homeland next week to participate
in the National Track and Field Championships at the National
Stadium.
On Saturday, Francique posted 44.92, his fastest time of the
season when he finished second at a Grand Prix Meet in Seville,
Spain.
