Grenada
to stage CARIFTA 2005
PORT-OF-SPAIN,
Trinidad - Grenadians could look forward to a number of regional and
international sporting events for the next two years.
Only a
week following the announcement of a two-year schedule of visiting English
sporting schools and clubs for warm-weather training here, the Grenada Athletics
Association (GAA) has successfully bid to host the 34th Junior
CARIFTA Track and Field Championships in 2005.
The
country’s bid was unanimously approved at the 32nd CARIFTA Games
Congress here on Sunday.
The
Grenada 2005 bid was fully endorsed by the Government of Grenada.
This
will be the second time Grenada would be staging the CARIFTA Games, the first
time in 2000.
Grenada
remains the only Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) territory to
host the games.
Both
the GAA and Government have welcomed the approval of the bid.
“I think
this is very exciting for us. We have over the years included this as part of
our plans of hosting meets,” Sports Minister Adrian Mitchell said.
He said
since the initial bid was made government has reiterated its full support
towards hosting of the games.
Mitchell,
who is here attending the games, believes Grenada’s participation and
performance at regional championships were determining factors in selecting
Grenada.
“This
will do well for us because we have quite a number of athletes including
Hazel-Ann Regis, Alleyne Francique who are doing well at college and
international level respectively and this will also help propelled the movement
of track and field,” he said.
Grenada is
already preparing to host the 2003 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior
Track and Field Championships in July.
