
Grenadian elected on Continental Boxing Federation

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Four Caribbean boxing administrators are among persons elected to a new executive of the Confederation of Pan American Boxing Federations (COPABOX) Congress here on Saturday.
Barbadian James Marshall retained his position as Secretary General after securing 16 votes against eight for his challenger, Luis Romio of Argentina.
The other members of the executive are Emmanuel Roberts of Grenada, Leroy Brown of Jamaica and Wellington Miller of the Bahamas as floor members.
In April Roberts was elected on the Press and Public Relations Commission of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA).
Ricardo Contreras of Mexico retained the presidency as well as Ray Silvas of the United States, as a vice president.
The other elected vice presidents are Rafael Vega of Costa Rica and Luis Bocelli of Brazil.
There is also a new treasurer in Hank Sommers of Canada while Manuel Fernandez of Venezuela and Washington Guttierez of Ecuador were also elected as floor members.
President of AIBA, Anwar Chowdry said there is heighten interest in school boxing (13-14 years and 15-16 years) following the success of the Cadet Championships.
He said over the next few months information from the technical commission will be sent to associations regarding the school boy boxing.
Profesor Chowdry said the medical commission has given the all clear for this project and is encouraging countries to implement.
Vice President of the Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) Michael Fennell, representing PASO’s President Mario Vasquez Rana, wants the boxing federations to solve the problem of referee/judge and the poor decisions which have plagued the sport.
Fennel also said that there must be more education about the rules and scoring of boxing.
