Changes to CARIFTA Team

Seven athletes have been added to Grenada's team to participate in this year's Junior CARIFTA Track and Field Championships in Trinidad over the Easter Weekend.

This brings the team's total to 48 athletes.

The additions were made following their impressive performances during last week's Scotia Bank Inter-Col Championships at the National Stadium.

The athletes selected are Skeeter Isaac, Kenisha Smart and Alison George in the Under-17 Girls' category; Ziska Phillip, Jody Placid and Wayne George in the boys' Under-17 category and Under-20 girls' Rockel Mitchell.

Isaac (GSS) won the high jump with a record height of 1.62m; Smart (MDC), who won the javelin event will join Rena Mitchell in the Under-17 girls category; and George (SJCSA) who won the long jump and placed second in the 100m.

Phillip (SMSS) was the third fastest junior boy at Inter-Col; Placid (BC) won the javelin with a record distance of 57.74m and George (SAASS) finished second in the same event.

Mitchell (SAASS) will join the list of competitors in the 100, 200, relays and possibly the high jump.

Up until Monday the Grenada Athletics Association was monitoring four athletes who sustained injuries during the Inter-Col Championships

Secretary of the Grenada Athletics Association (GAA) Conrad Francis said a physiotherapist would assess the injuries before making a final declaration.

Meantime, Grenada’s CARIFTA athletes will have a final “send-off” competition on April 15.

They would compete against Oakham School, a visiting English High School.

The GAA has scheduled the meet to begin at 4 p.m. so the public will be able to see the national team before they depart two days later.
