ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, April
2, 2009 – St. David's Catholic Secondary School (SDCSS) retained the girls'
title of the Scotiabank Inter-Secondary Schools' Athletics Championship for
a record 11th consecutive year while McDonald College (MDC) regained the
boys' championship.
SDCSS amassed 137 points,
62 more than their nearest finisher, St. Andrew's Anglican Secondary School
(SAASS) on 75 points to win easily and register an 11th title - the most by
any individual school. St. Joseph's Convent St. Andrew finished third with
47 points.
Junior girls Antonia Wilson
and Lucy Fortune were outstanding for SDCSS with the former totaling 14
points along with Nickhelia John of SAASS while Fortune finished with 12
points in the individual championship.
MDC gained crucial points
by winning both senior boys' relays with Rondell Bartholomew playing leading
roles. He ran splendid final leg to win the 4x100m relay and then gave MDC a
sizeable lead in the 4x400m relay to ensure victory and the championship.
MDC, who lost the title to
SAASS in 2008, finished on 89 points, with the Grenada Boys' Secondary
School (GBSS) taking the second spot on 70 points and Grenville Secondary
School finishing third on 53 points.
The highlight of the final
day was another match-up between Kirani James and Bartholomew - this time
over the 200 metres.
James took no chances and
running out of lane five accelerated at top speed to win in a record time of
20.80 seconds. Bartholomew, who already secured the 100m (10.50secs), was
second in 21.50secs and Josh Charles also of MDC was third in 22.20 secs.
On the first day James, the World Junior 400m Silver medalist and his rival Bartholomew were the headlined acts. James produced an
outstanding run over the 400m to win in record time of 45.30 secs (hand
timed) after Bartholomew (46.00) threatened his anticipated victory 80 metres away.
It was the fastest time
clocked by James after he secured the silver (45.70secs) at the 12th
IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz last July.
Both athletes confirmed
their rivalry for next weekend’s Junior CARIFTA Games in St. Lucia where
they will both compete over the 400m in the Under-20 Boys’ category.
Bartholomew is the defending champion in that age group.
