MOSCOW, Russia: Grenadian jumper Randy Lewis set a new national record in
finishing second in the men's Triple Jump competition during the 2007
Russian Winter, an IAAF Permit Indoor meeting, which took place on Sunday
January 28, in the Russian capital of Moscow.
Lewis, a sixth place finisher in the event at the 18th Commonwealth Games,
in Melbourne, Australia, last March, produced an indoor personal best jump
of 17.04m to take second place behind Russian Aleksandr Sergeyev, who leaped
a seasonal best of 17.12m.
Cubans David Giralt and Yoandri Betanzos, recorded personal and seasonal
bests for fourth and sixth places respectively.
There were also top three finishes for Jamaican Vonette Dixon and Virgen
Benavídes of Cuba.
Dixon took third in the women's 60m hurdles decision that went down to the
wire in the closing metres. After clocking 8.17secs to take second in her
heat, the Jamaican finished behind Russians Irina Pepelyayeva (8.12) and
Tatyana Dektyareva (8.13). She clocked a seasonal best of 8.13secs.
Cuba's Yenima Arencibia bettered her first round performance of 8.20 to take
fourth in 8.19.
Benavídes also did well in the women's 60m dash to run a season's best of
7.35 for third. The Cuban, surrounded by a host of Russian sprinters,
crossed the finishing line behind Yevgeniya Polyakova (7.18) and Marina
Kislova (7.20).
Other notable names competing at the meeting were Cubans Yargelis Savigne,
who despite producing a seasonal best of 6.33m, had to settled for 9th in
the women's Long Jump, Víctor Moya (2.24) finished 7th in the men's High
Jump, while former Olympic champion Anier García ran 7.94 twice to take 5th
place in the men's 60m hurdles.
