The
Grenada Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) is now equipped with
more officials for local tournaments.
About
20 participants on Saturday completed a one-week referee/judge
course at the National Stadium.
The
GABA can now boast of six referee/judge officials including three
women. They topped the theoretical and practical examinations and
are now qualified to officiate GABA-sanctioned tournaments.
Lynette
Baker scored an average of 96.3 percent in the theoretical
examination, Shermain Charles 84 percent in the practical and
Elizabeth Dottin 83.6 percent also in the practical.
The
other top performers are Winston Flumo, Kennis Joseph and Julien
Walton. All the participants were presented with certificates by
President of the Grenada Olympic Association (GOA) Royston LaHee,
President of the GABA, Emmanuel Roberts, Secretary of GABA,
Johnson St. Louis and Course Instructor, Fitzroy Beckles of
Trinidad and Tobago.
Roberts
said the association is ensuring that the referees and judges are
very knowledgeable about the sport, and is pleased with the
interest shown by the young people, particularly the women.
"For
the first time there were women participants at the Caribbean
Amateur Boxing Championships in the Bahamas this year, and this
means that we have to start getting the women involved, even at
the officiating level," Roberts said.
