The West Indies saw their
recent run of form come to an end as they lost their opening
one-day international with Sri Lanka in Barbados on Saturday.
The Windies, buoyed by three consecutive wins over world
champions Australia, seemed to have laid the perfect platform for
victory after limiting Sri Lanka to a total of 201 at the
Kensington Oval.
But that modest score proved beyond the home side as they
collapsed to a pitiful 146 and the tourists prevailed by 55 runs.
The West Indies never recovered after openers Chris Gayle and
Wavell Hinds were both dismissed for ducks, even though skipper
Brian Lara fought to the end with an unbeaten 64.
Apart from Lara, only Marlon Samuels and Ridley Jacobs got into
double figures. Samuels' 29 off 38 balls in a 54-run fifth-wicket
stand with Lara kept the West Indies in the game but the writing
looked on the wall after his dismissal to Dharshana Garmage.
Jacobs, although looking at sea against Muttiah Muralitharan,
stuck around with Lara for a while but, when he flashed the
spinner to point and was taken by Sanath Jayasuriya, it looked
even more bleak.
David Bernard Jnr (0), Vasbert Drakes (4), Mervyn Dillon (2)
and Corey Collymore (3) were dismissed very quickly to leave Lara
high and dry.
Muralitharan, with three for 17, Chaminda Vaas with two for 16
and Prabath Nissanka, two for 27, did most of the damage for the
Sri Lankans.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had struggled to come to grips with the West
Indies bowling.
Only Romesh Kaluwitharana, with 54 off 75 balls, and Kumar
Dharmasena, with 40 off 54 balls, provided any resistance against
the West Indies bowlers.
Tillakaratne Dilshan with 27, captain Marvan Atapattu (22),
Kumar Sangakkara (15) and Vaas (10) also reached double figures
against Dillon whose figures of three for 39 made him the pick of
the Windies bowlers.
