ST GEORGE’S, Grenada,
October 28 – Grenada is set to play its opening game in the second round of
the Caribbean Qualification of the 2009 CONCACAF Under-20 Football
Championships in the Dominican Republic on arrival.
The Grenada Football
Association (GFA) said that attempts to get flights into Santo Domingo in
time for the start of the three-nation qualifying tournament are proving
very difficult.
President of the GFA,
Ashley “Ram” Folkes said that despite repeated attempts the association was
unable to get flights for the team to arrive ahead of the start of the
opening game on October 31.
Grenada is scheduled to
play in Group F along with host, the Dominican Republic and neighbours
Haiti.
“Over the last month we
have been trying to get flights to travel to the Dominican Republic. The
problem we are finding is that because there is not a customary traffic
between Grenada and DR (Dominican Republic) you can’t get 20 people on one
flight,” Folkes said.
“They have suggested that
we travel via the United States but this means we have to get visas for the
players and officials”.
Technical Administrator of
the GFA, Lester Smith has confirmed that the team will depart Grenada on
November 2 and play Haiti later that day in Santo Domingo.
The young Spice Boyz will
play the host the following day.
