Tom Poitras
An
American soccer coach will be scouting for local talent beginning this weekend.
Tom
Poitras, head coach of Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) of the USA
arrived here on Thursday and will be on the island until Tuesday. He is here on
the invitation of Fontenoy United Club.
Grenada's
Anthony Augustine is a midfielder at SNHU.
The club
has already schedule two exhibition games for players who meet the criteria for
US scholarships.
The first
game will feature a Select Academic Team versus the National Under-23 team on
Friday at the Beausejour PLaying Field and Premier League campaigner Fontenoy United and the National Under-23
team on Monday at the Tanteen Recreation Ground.
Coach
Poitras would also have a courtesy call on the Minister of Sports, Hon. Adrian
Mitchell. He would also meet the leadership of the GFA and witness the opening
of the 2003-2004 GFA season on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, coach Poitras will speak with students seeking sports
scholarships and also meet with local coaches and football officials.
PROFILE:
Tom Poitras was named the fifth
head coach in the history of SNHU men’s soccer on June 24, 1998.
Over the past four seasons Poitras has led the Penmen to a combined 54-15-10
record and three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances. The Penmen claimed the
2000 NCAA Tournament New England region title and were ranked ranked 7th in the
final NSCAA national poll that year.
Poitras came to SNHU following a four-year stint as head men’s soccer coach at
the University of New Haven. He quickly developed the Chargers into one of the
top teams in the Northeast and was honored as the New England Collegiate
Conference Coach of the Year in 1996 after leading the program to a
13-5-1 record and an appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) Division II tournament. In 1997 the Chargers posted a 15-6-1 record and
made their second-straight appearance in the ECAC playoffs.
Prior to taking over at New Haven, Poitras spent three years as boy’s soccer
coach at North Haven High School where his teams posted a 33-16-3 record and
twice advanced to the quarterfinals of the Connecticut state championship
tournament.
Poitras earned his 'A' coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation
in 1993 and has served as a staff member of the United States Youth Soccer
Association Region 1 Olympic Development Program since 1993.
A 1991 graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, he was a four-year
starter for the Owls and was a member of SCSU’s 1987 national championship
team. He participated in four-straight NCAA Division II Tournaments and helped
the Owls claim three NECC titles. He received his degree in recreation and
leisure studies.
Poitras continued his playing career with the Connecticut Wolves of the United
States Interregional Soccer League in 1993 and 1994.
He was a two-year member of the boy's soccer team at St. Paul High School in
Bristol, CT, before transferring to Southington High School for his junior and
senior years. A member of Southington's Soccer Hall of Fame, he collected
all-state honors in each of his two seasons.
