Francique & Regis copped Grenada's Sports Personalities
Awards
ST GEORGE'S, Grenada, (Jan 24) - Quarter-milers
Alleyne Francique and Hazel-Ann Regis were crowned Grenada’s sports
personalities for 2003 here on Saturday.
Both athletes won from a field of 15
nominees. This is the third consecutive year Francique has won the sports award.
Francique opens his 2004 season with the Tyson Foods
Invitational (Golden Spike Tour) in Fayetteville, Arkansas on February 14. He
will also compete in the Norwich Union Indoor Grand Prix (IAAF Permit,
incorporating Energizer EuroSeries Round 3) on February 20; the Meeting Athína
2004 (IAAF Permit) on February 22 and the Meeting Gaz de France du Pas de Calais
(IAAF Permit, incorporating Energizer EuroSeries Round 4) on February 28.
Also receiving awards were Gabriella Grant
of T.A. Marryshow Community College and Andray Charles of Presentation Brothers
College (Female and Male Student/Athletes) and Nathalia Vincent of St John's
Christian Secondary School and Andre Fletcher of St David's Catholic Secondary School
(Junior Sportswoman and Sportsman).
Special Awards from the Grenada Olympic
Association were also presented to Track and Field Coach Denise Williams;
William Gittens and C.K Sylvester while the Ministry of Sport, Community
Development and Co-operatives presented a special award to Walter St John for
his outstanding contribution to cricket and sport in general for over 25 years.
The guest speaker was Dr Patrick Antoine,
Strategic Trade Policy Advisor to the Government of Grenada and Ambassador and
Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ceremony, which was held at the Rex
Grenadian Hotel, was also attended by Governor General Sir Daniel Williams and
Minister of Sports, Honourable Roland Bhola, was broadcast live on television
for the first time.
The nominees for the Sportsman and
Sportswoman Awards were Shane Joseph (Boxing); Fronzie Charles
(Taekwando); Natalia Vincent and Chad Mitchell (Basketball); Sylma Phillip and
Glynn James (Tennis); Troy Felix (Cycling); Tuesday Watts and Kian Ashby
(Swimming); Racquel Campbell and Alexander Hossle (Karate); Hazel-Ann Regis and
Alleyne Francique (Track and Field); Shalrie Joseph (Football) and Jeneil Jacobs
(Netball).
