GEORGE’S, Grenada, Jan 29,
2007 (CMC)
– The Grenada Olympic Committee is seeking a meeting with government to plan
a national sports policy and plot the way forward for sports in the country.
GOC’s president Royston La Hee said much work needed to be done to develop
sports on the island and appealed to national associations and the
government to work together on this effort.
He
admitted government could not drive the effort alone and that associations
needed to play a strong role.
La
Hee said that a national sports policy and a home for the GOC were among
priorities for 2007.
“Very soon the Olympic Committee will meet with government to discuss plans
for sport – for the formation of a national sports policy and most
importantly a home for the NOC (National Olympic Committee), among other
things,” La Hee said as he addressed the National Sports Awards here
Saturday.
“One
of our primary objectives is to have an Olympic House. Other countries have
done it. We hope the government could provide us with a bit of land so we
could build a house (Olympic).”
He
said it was also important that a home for sport be established so that the
country’s sporting history could be archived.
“We
need a repository for our history. It’s something we need to do for 2007 so
our future generation could appreciate our past achievers and achievements,”
the official said.
La
Hee, who has been at the helm of the GOC for more than 20 years, also
appealed for all stakeholders to renew their commitment to the development
of sport on the island.
“We
believe that if we put all our heads together we could achieve much for the
development of sporting activities,” he noted.
He
said the sporting culture needed to cater for the development of sports for
all ages and all levels and encouraged the public to use the facilities
which were now available.
“It
worries me when I look at the facility that we’re putting up for cricket and
see the level of cricket that is being played here in Grenada,” he remarked.
“We
need to get people to play more cricket, we need to have programmes so
people will recreate, people will want to see sports and people will fill
the facilities we are building.” |
