[NETBALL]

Patron
of netball in Grenada, Lady Gloria Williams has said that netball
needs to shift gear and warned netballers not to enjoy total
satisfaction over their local achievement.
Speaking
at the closing of the 2003 Cable & Wireless National Netball
Tournament on Saturday, Lady Williams said in spite of the
victories by some teams and even the improvement by others, the
standard of playing needs to be more competitive.
“You
are on top in Grenada; but where does Grenada rate in the region?
Are you first, second or third? If you are not at the top, are you
satisfied to remain second best?
The
advice comes as Grenada prepares to participate in the World
Netball Tournament in Jamaica next month.

“Most
of the sports in which we engage in Grenada are team sports.
Netball is one of them; and you know in order to be a winner, it
takes hard practice and more so it takes regular practice by every
member of the team. I therefore encourage you to keep on working
on your weak points over and over in order to be first class in
your division.
Those
of you who are winners, this admonition is for you as well. Never
adopt the attitude that you are already on top and so you can
relax and practice less.” Lady Williams said.
Meantime,
Cable & Wireless has once again pledged support for local
netball. Head of Mobile Services, Nella Roberts the support also
include assisting the national team for the Cable & Wireless
World Netball Tournament.
“Netball
to us, represents an investment in the women of our country and we
are pleased to see so many young ladies playing the game and
trying to develop their skills.
In
addition to sponsoring the 2003 Netball Tournament, we are also a
sponsor for the National Team which will be participating in the
Cable & Wireless World Netball Championship in Jamaica.”
Caribbean
Agro Queen’s Park Rangers won most of the major titles at the
2003 Cable & Wireless National Tournament, winning the march
past, the “B’ Division League Tournament and the “A” and
“B” Division Knock-Out Championships.
The
Grenada Netball Association (GNA) also took the opportunity to
honour two individuals who have given a good part of their life in
the service of netball.
Former
sports minister Roy St. John and long-serving schoolteacher
Eleanor Pilgrim were recognized by the GNA for their dedication
and commitment to the game.
