[NETBALL]
Grenada won the ECCB/OECS
Under-23 Netball Tournament in Nevis which concluded on the
weekend.
The 'Spice Girls' won the tournament on a better goal average
following victories over Dominica, Antigua and St Kitts, but lost
to Nevis.
Nevis, on the other hand, also posted victories over Dominica
and St Kitts but lost to Antigua.
The Grenada team returns here on Monday evening.
Meantime, while addressing the gathering during the opening
ceremony, Premier Vance Amory said that it was a great pleasure
for him to welcome the competitors to Nevis, and offered the full
hospitality and warmth of the people of Nevis.
Premier Amory observed that one should be witnessing a keen
competition and added, “Each team I know has high expectation of
providing excellent performances so that the members of the team
will be victorious at the end of the competition.”
“We often speak of competition as being friendly rivalry,”
said Premier Amory, “but I risk seeming to be a hard person and
not to understand the intricacies of sports, and to say that I
have reviewed that phase over and over and I have come to that
conclusion that maybe there is no such thing as friendly
rivalry.”
He continued, “but rather we should encourage in these games
an engagement among the teams but also encourage the teams and
those who play to comply with the rules of the games and with the
rules of fairness and good judgement.”
He told the participants to look at the fact that winning was
not the sole objective of the game, but the fostering of
friendship and the fostering of good relations were very
important. He ventured by saying that the development of the
future human capital of the region was paramount in the minds of
the organizers of the championships.
According to the Premier, “I believe we shall be seeing great
potential of our young ladies and we shall be seeing more, and we
shall also be seeing the hope and the expectations of the
Caribbean region. I want to encourage our young people, especially
our young ladies to pursue noble and high ideals and objectives,
to see that the world is changing, and that those who rise on top
are those who demonstrate the ability to do so,” commented
Amory.
