ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, Feb 1,
2007 – Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Sports Coordinator
David Peterkin said the high cost of regional travel is continuing to affect
sports in the sub-region.
Speaking to reporters here
Peterkin said that air travel and sponsorship are main factors affecting the
proper execution of the sporting programmes.
“It is cheaper to travel from
Trinidad to Miami than to Dominica,” he said. “How do we expect to attract
athletes to our tournaments and championships,” Peterkin queried.
The director at the OECS
Sports Desk has repeatedly appeal for more sponsorship of events in the
island-chain territories.
“It is a fact that airfares
are skyrocketing....lets look at the cost of air travel within the OECS over
the past year....and as the cost of everything gets higher usually known as
inflation, the sponsorship contributions have not been inflated”.
“While the Secretariat (OECS)
thanks it's sponsors, surely the Manufacturing base in T&T that relies
heavily on the OECS market should step up to the plate and agree to provide
sponsorship to sport in the OECS,” he said.
“In 2007 I believe all the
stakeholders should become acutely aware of the situation and provide real
assistance not lip service,” he added. |
