[OLYMPIC GAMES]
ATHENS,
Greece, August 20 - Any
hopes of Grenada medalling here in Athens are left up to quarter-milers Alleyne
Framcique and Hazel-Ann Regis. This after Randy Lewis failed to advance to the
semifinals of the men's triple jump on Friday morning.
Lewis
recorded only one good jump of 16.33 metres, far below his previous best of
17.34m.
He
crossed the whiteboard on his first two attempts but was sure to go over the
qualifying 17-metre mark.
And
as a precautionary step on his final attempt, he was off by a couple inches from
the board that could have cost him a place in Sunday's final.
Leevan
Sands of the Bahamas and Le Juan Simon of Trinidad and Tobago also failed to
qualify, with only Cuban Yoelbi Quesada advancing from the region.
In
related news, seven Caribbean sprinters went through to the second round of the
women's 100 metres.
Aleen
Bailey, Sherone Simpson and Veronica Campbell of Jamaica; Debbie
Ferguson and Chandra Sturrup of the
Bahamas, Natasha Mayers of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Fana Ashby of
Trinidad and Tobago all qualified for the next round on Friday evening.
By
that time Alleyne Francique should also attempt to advance to the
semifinal stage of the men's 400m.
He
is down to compete at exactly 9:10 p.m. Athens Time or 2:10 p.m. Eastern
Caribbean Time.
Hazel-Ann
Regis will begin her campaign on Saturday.
