[OLYMPIC GAMES]
ST GEORGE’S, September 4 –
Grenada’s 2004 Olympic Team will be honoured here next week.
Plans are in place for a
special welcome and ceremony for the Olympic team which participated in the
Olympic Games in Athens last month.
World Indoor 400m champion,
Alleyne Francique and female quarter-miler Hazel-Ann Regis are expected here on
Monday, and along with triple jumper Randy Lewis will attend a press conference
and visits to schools across the island.
The two other members of the
team, swimmers Melissa Ashby and Jonathan Steele have left the island to attend
universities in the United States.
Prime Minister Dr Keith
Mitchell had promised Francique a diplomatic passport following his creditable
performance in the final of the men’s 400m at the Olympics. Francique was highly
favoured to win a medal but finished fourth in the final.
However, his performance still
sparked national celebrations since he became the first Grenadian to make it to
the final in an event in the Olympic Games.
He will receive his diplomatic
credentials at a ceremony on Monday September 13.
Regis made the semi-finals of
the women’s 400m while Lewis, Ashby and Steele were all commendable in their
respective events.
