Is his appointment the right move or a
step backwards for Caribbean cricket?
This is the best thing to have happened to
West Indies cricket in recent times. Who else is more equipped to
inspire a young, talented batting line up, than Brian Lara?
His refreshed enthusiasm for the game
coupled with his talent and lateral thinking are going to go a long way
in taking West Indies cricket back to the top.
Quite frankly, Carl Hooper is not
consistent enough to be able to lead from the front. His rigid thinking
has cost the team dear and WI could very well do without him. He doesn't
command a batting place anymore and it's not fair to be leaving Marlon
Samuels out.
The selectors should move forward and
blood the youngster Devon Smith in this series.
Good luck Brian and welcome back...we
look forward to another 1999.
Surya Pappu, USA
The prince is BACK! I hope he treats us
with the same fireworks which greeted the Aussies last time!! Welcome
home Lara!
I hope it will be a new chapter in
the glorious West Indian history!
Ram, Providence, RI
The West Indies, made the right choice,
who knows how long Hooper's knees will last.
Chanderpaul is a consistent cricketer,
but he does not posses the leadership qualities, the Windies should have
Hinds as vice captain for the series against Sri Lanka, so that both him
and Sarwan are groomed to eventually take over as captain and vice
captain.
Osei James, Bermuda
It's Great to see Lara back as West
Indies Captain as memories of the 1999 series are still fresh in my
mind.
Carl Hooper gave great service to West
Indies cricket over the years, and for that he must be thanked and we
must now move on towards the future.
Rondon Thomas, Sangre Grande Trinidad
The two other great cricketing nations,
(Pakistan, West Indies) have taken step backwards in the World Cup this
year. What these teams need is a bunch of young kids to walk in and lose
or win for the next three or four years.
Putting Lara in is a temporary thing.
They will eventually need a new man that is young and bold, and putting
that kid in before the World Cup would be a grave mistake.
Ali, USA, NYC
Brian Lara was the only man for the Job.
This is now his time, the Windies are on the rise.
Chiryl Newman, St.James Barbados West Indies
The selectors had no choice but to name
Lara captain.
I hope the captaincy will not prove a
burden to the Trinidadian genius but he has proved he can balance the
roles of captaincy and star batsman in the past.
Alex Bryce, Wiltshire
Carl Hooper has done an admirable job and
should stay on as captain.
Daniel, Eckington
Nice to see Lara back and I'm pleased for
him. I hope you go forward to set more records.
Nosa Evbuomwan, Dallas, Texas
Lara's appointment as captain is the best
choice given the limited number of candidates to choose from.
Hooper has done well since his return,
the team was in a really bad state and he has laid a solid foundation
for us to build upon.
However, at this point we need to be more
aggressive and assert ourselves on the game when we sense an opening; we
must be prepared to take chances and be innovative, and this is where
Hooper falls short.
It is too big to ask for Sarwan at this
stage. When Hooper was appointed we all knew he would not be around
forever. Where was our succession planning?
Why did we have to wait until
Hooper says he is thinking about calling it a day before we start
looking for a new captain?
Marlon Clyne, Grenada W.I.
